Chapter 4: February 1938
The moon was so lovely tonight--a quarter moon all shiny up in the sky. Kenny and I minded Louie’s kids for her and they’re all such darlings. She’s a neighbor of mine and she always needs some help with those little rascals, but I just adore them so much that I drag my sweetheart into it as often as I can! Oh, I can hardly wait till we’re married and we can have children of our own.
I have been searching for work so much lately, it’s so hard! There’s almost no one who will hire a young girl like me, they all want big strong boys. I’ve been trying in the shops around town, but I don’t have many skills other than my sewing and cooking. Maybe I could get by being a seamstress…? I wish I was working. Then I would have something to do with my life while Kenny’s not here. Instead, I just baked a banana cake today. It was very good.
Just when I thought the weather was getting better, it snowed again today. I guess it still is only February, but I feel that once Christmas is over the snow should be too. Well even though it’s freezing outside, Jo and I went for a walk out to Meadowlily Trail just down the street. It’s only about half an hour to walk down there to the park, and then a lovely trail out in the snow. There are usually quite a few people there, so it’s nice to get to say hi to them.
