Chapter 1: January 1938
My name is Millie Glaholm, and I’m 17 years old. I was born in London, Ontario, Canada in 1920, and I’ve lived here my entire life in the same house on Madison Avenue with my parents, older brother, and two sisters. We have so much fun together, especially me and Jo. She’s almost 14, but we still do just about everything together. Our favorite thing is go to the Rex--that’s the cinema just in town here, and we see shows all the time.
I guess the only other people I spend more time with than Jo are my darling Kenny--Kenneth Smith who lives here in town real close to me, and whom I’ve known for just ages and ages and I love so much--and my best girl friend Louie. I don’t do much with both of them at the same time though, it’s sort of a one-on-one type of thing.
Why just the other day my darling came over, and it was the first time in days! Oh I had missed him so much, but we just had a fight on Sunday so I think he was still rather cross with me. I’m not even sure I remember what we fought about! But for days and days I’ve been worrying about him and just hoping he would come back, and he finally did. How I wish I didn’t love him so much.
Kenny wanted to go tobogganing, but I’m not one for outdoor adventures very much, so we just stayed home. Usually Kenny is the one hoping to go out and I’m the one begging him to stay in--so we usually stay in. That was the case for tonight as well, though I think I upset him when I didn’t want to go. I’m not really much of a girlfriend, I guess. We just ended up going to a show at the Rex, so I think that satisfied him just a bit. The Rex is our local theater and it always has the most wonderful new shows, so many romances and comedies from the best directors there are around.
