Chapter 2: January 1938

I have had just the worst headache in the world this week! It came on about Friday I think, and it’s still bothering me even now, which is Monday. I did go to the doctor, but he really couldn’t do much about it. Oh well. I’ve mostly been playing checkers and cards with Kenny and Mum, and helping a bit around the house. I’m glad to not be in school anymore.
Now that my headache is gone, my tooth has decided that it should get a turn to hurt! Oh why can’t my body just leave me be? Mrs. Smith (Kenny’s mother) tried to help me with the toothache, but no luck. I guess I’ll have to go forward with the doctor’s appointment I have in a few days--they said they’d pull two teeth!
I’ve been getting a lot more into reading lately. Kenny will sit at the table and draw while I curl up on the sofa with my book. It’s quite a lovely little routine--and I do love him so much. At least it’s better than when we play checkers or crokinole, because my darling will always get upset when I beat him--sometimes he swears at me and then storms out, but at least he’ll apologize when he comes again the next day. This way though, we each keep to ourselves and just enjoy the quiet.
It’s been snowing like the dickens all day today. We couldn’t do much for the cold, but by the time it was evening it had warmed up just a little bit. At least enough for us to go out to the Rex and see “The 3 Mesquiteers” and “She Had to Eat.” Both really swell. Oh gosh, I really love my Kenny. What a sweet young man he is, and he’s all mine!
