Chapter 5: March 1938
‘Tis agony to be in love. I long to see Kenny and be with him all day every day, but he is so busy with his job at night that I hardly get to anymore. He came over for one precious hour today and we stayed home listening to ghost stories on the radio. Only two more days and he can come over to stay. It was Pop’s night off tonight too, so we all spent some special time together.
Auntie Amy said that I’ll be working in just three weeks’ time. That was really comforting though it will be hard. It’ll just be nice that I’ll have something to be doing. In other news, today Kenny took me on a ride in Vaughn’s brand new car. It’s very nice and it drives very smooth. It’s wonderful having older siblings who can share with us.
The other day we went to a birthday party for one of our friends, Art. I didn’t see much of Kenny...there were too many other women there fighting for the attention of our men. I just stayed away because I didn’t want to get caught up in that mess. He left by 1:00 and that was it. But then today he came over and he brought me some chocolates to say he was sorry. That I’m his girl, and I’m the only one he really needs. We listened to a ghost story and then he left and that was that. I do love him so very much.
Since Kenny has been taking such good care of me, I’m trying to give him a break. I’m trying to be a better girlfriend to him, and I also have visited his dear mother more. Mrs. Smith is the kindest lady, she has been raising her three children all by herself for the past seventeen years since her husband died just after Kenny was born. I admire her so much for keeping her family so close together and doing it all on her own, too. I hope I can be half the woman she is someday.
