Chapter 8: May 1938
Finally found a job! Mum and & I have been cleaning house so that’s been something, but I also got something set up at Krackley-nut. They’re a popcorn business and they’ve got me just packaging for now. Not bad.
It’s been a rough couple of days with Kenny; he comes over almost daily still but every time he does he just sleeps. Since he’s working nights he’s always so tired which I understand but it just doesn’t make it easy for me! I felt like fighting with him today but I didn’t. I just let him sleep. I do love him so much but he makes my life so difficult. Tonight I went dancing with the gang, and I’m so worried Ken will find out I went without him. Didn’t get home till 1:30.
Well things are going a little better with Kenny, we’ve made up and he apologized for being gone so much. Also today Mum and Edie went to the dentist and Edie had some teeth out. Everyone’s having dental work done, it’s probably my turn next. I’m now working at Thirst-ade doing packaging again. Not much fun but at least it’s work. It’s warm enough out that I can spend time doing some planting out in the yard or hang the clothes to dry without worrying about the frost. So at least there’s something to be doing that’s not packaging drinks.
I got a parcel from England today--a nice dress really but just a dreadful colour. Horrible with my skin. I’m not sure what I’ll do with it--give it to Jo, maybe.
There’s a new place downtown called Schneider’s--they have the most delicious sodas there, I’ve had one nearly every day since it opened. Ken and I like to go there after our shows down at the Rex, or I go with the gang. It’s a good place for everyone really. My favorite is the cream soda--it’s their specialty.
Kenny has been off work for a few days, so I’ve gotten to see him a lot more often. But he just started back on nights again so we haven’t gotten much time together again. I don’t like this work cycle he’s on. Mum is sick too, so I’m all by myself taking care of the house while she’s in bed all day. I went down to Tup’s yesterday but nobody was home, so I just came back and read papers by myself. Rather lonely stuff. Today when I went back to Tup’s, I made an appointment for a perm for my hair.
